Evil Kittens!

Most of you have seen the commercials touting a foreign language program with a well-known Olympic gold medal swimmer. This popular software package highly polished, known as Rosetta Stone, is a very good example (but not the only example) of a total immersion program. But the ads promoting "The most learn a language fast â € "Guaranteed", not necessarily paint a complete picture for the potential buyer.

What is?

Let's start by exploring what is meant by "total immersion". A total immersion system is any program that immerses you in a foreign language without (or remote) assistance in their mother tongue. The basic idea is to learn the image / video and audio reinforcement â € "of the same way you learned your native language as a child. The concept is very simple – present a situation of dialogue, or group of images and the challenge that the user (initially) to "guess" the native word or phrase that applies to the situation. Variations on this basic theme include audio and image unique construction kinds of sentences and grammar reinforcement. Other DVD-based programs currently common situations on video with the tracks of the screen (often referring to what the actor described), eventually provide the answer, without user interaction. More extensive computer programs include speech recognition to help learn the accent native. Through these methods, the student is expected to easily and quickly absorbed the new language. In practice, however, is not as simple nor as fast as advertised.

When successful

As you can imagine, some aspects of a language are easier to transmit images than others. Immersion programs do the best job of teaching vocabulary object â € "also known as nouns. It is hoped that when someone sees a cat, which finally will realize the word that corresponds with the jack at the time. A cat is a specific object easily identifiable, and I am sure you can think of thousands more. Similarly, the colors and numbers are easy, because they are easy to represent in images. These programs also make a good job in transportation of the meanings of action verbs, particularly in the present tense. Immersion is also a great way to introduce a pre-teen to a foreign language. By nature, children are more sensitive to this type of education and tend to absorb this material like a sponge â € "the youngest is the best thing.

When an error occurs.

Total immersion programs may actually lengthen the amount of time it takes to learn a language in an adult when used as a unique learning tool.

In summary

Despite these potential shortcomings (in particular for adults), total immersion not cancel all â € "not expected to use as your main source of learning language.
